What is TCM & Acupuncture?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest complete medical systems dating back as far as 2500 years, and only just recently finding a place in modern medical care. TCM is based on the belief that the mind and body work together to form one system and the meridians in the body cohesively keep the body balanced and in good working order. As long as the vital substances (oxygen enriched blood) in the body are flowing freely through these meridians, health is maintained.
One of the most common treatment modalities in TCM is Acupuncture. It involves the insertion of extremely fine, sterile, and disposable needles into the skin at specific points. Disease or disharmony in the body occurs when there is a disruption in the movement of blood, oxygen, and other vital substances. Acupuncture serves to alter or improve the flow of these substances, thus encouraging the body to activate it's own natural healing abilities and pain management mechanisms, improve mood and energy, and improve function of affected areas of the body.
Broadly speaking, acupuncture has 3 main effects; it relieves pain, reduces inflammation, and restores internal homeostasis (balance). Acupuncture treats the body as a whole and the root of all conditions and symptoms, thus curing disease rather than masking symptoms. Acupuncture is safe, gentle, and has among the fewest side effects of any treatment modality. Not only is acupuncture an effective treatment in its own right, but it is a perfect complement to any other treatment modalities to enhance your body's response or combat negative side-effects.
